Since the very beginning, Vasco Electronics was driven by one goal – to make communication among people easier. We stayed true to this objective until this day, and we are happy to say that we took part in another initiative that fulfills our mission. Last year, we started cooperation with Quinnipiac University (Hamden, USA). At the time, they launched a Student Consulting Project, which aimed at making communication between students (and their families) and academic organizations easier. Finally, we decided to take our cooperation to the next level and test Vasco M3 translators in schools.

Foreign Students & Families: Problems they face

International students encounter many issues when they come to study in the USA. They may have to learn a new language or at least get more fluency in it, get used to the culture and make friends in an environment that is drastically different for some. And all of this while still trying to achieve educational goals!

How can Vasco Translator help?

As stated in the beginning of this article, our main goal in Vasco Electronics is to facilitate communication among all the people around the world. We noticed the struggle that students and their families may have when studying in the new country of residence and saw this as a field where our devices might prove helpful.  Academics may use it not only to communicate with students and their families using a Voice Translation feature, but also lend them to the others during lectures. This way, students can use a Photo Translator to understand text around them: on a board, in the textbook or a University class chat. This is especially useful for those who are accustomed to a different writing system in their own language, e.g. students from Arabic countries.

Our collaboration

The Student Consulting Project incorporated the use of Vasco Translators at 2 schools in Hamden and New Haven for 3 semesters until late Spring 2022. We were moved to hear that the positive feedback was beyond expectations – both from teachers and students.  The device’s high accuracy and ease of use were the two comments made by people who tested it most frequently. The teachers stressed the value of the Vasco Translators, particularly when talking to parents with limited English proficiency. The student team also tested this real time translator in the University’s equipment. Similar to that, they said that devices are easy to use and accurate when translating. Interestingly enough, students emphasized that they prefer to use a standalone device rather than a translation app in a smartphone. The main reason for this was that apps demand transferring mobile devices from hand to hand. A standalone pocket translator eliminates this inconvenience.

What’s for the future?

Such a fruitful collaboration couldn’t pass without talking of continuity. We hope to engage in more future projects of Quinnipiac University to further facilitate the communication between academics and students. Education is in the end the greatest hope to change the world for a better place!
