Do you study the vocabulary of Klingon, the pronunciation of Dothraki, or the grammar of Na\u2019vi?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, then you should know that all fictional languages we know today were inspired by the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, a mastermind behind the world of Middle-earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>So,<\/strong> <\/span><strong>what language did Tolkien come up with<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Or, maybe there was more than one?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J.R.R. Tolkien is thought to be an inventor of artistic languages in general. These linguistic constructs are supposed to be as convincing as real-world languages, so they usually have their own vocabulary, grammar, and history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"faq-section\">\n<h3>FAQ:<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"question1\">Is Tolkien&#8217;s Elvish a real language?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"answer1\">There is actually more than one Elvish language created by Tolkien. The most popular ones are Sindarin and Quenya, which are artificially created tongues. Their aim is to enrich the fictional world of Middle Earth and make it feel more real.<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"question2\">What is the main language in Lord of the Rings?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"answer2\">Westron is the universal language spoken in Middle Earth. It is used by the majority of the creatures created by Tolkien, including Hobbits and Men of Gondor.<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"question3\">What language do the Teleri speak?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"answer3\">Teleri is a language used by a group of Elves who didn&#8217;t participate in the Great Journey to Aman.<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"question4\">What is the secret language of the Dwarves?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"answer4\">The secret language of Dwarves is called Khuzdul. It was harsh and unpleasant, in contrast to the Elvish languages which were gentle and melodic.<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"question5\">How do you say hello in Khuzdul?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"answer5\" style=\"margin-bottom: 40px;\">Unfortunately, Khuzdul is limited in vocabulary. Fans have tried to create new words based on what was written by Tolkien, so there are many variations of Dwarvish greetings. One of the Dwarvish online dictionaries claims &#8220;Hello&#8221; is &#8220;Huglgla&#8221;, but that still may be inaccurate since there is no reliable source of information concerning this language. world we\u2019re actually living in! Not only did he put Elves, Orcs, and other magical creatures in his stories, but he also gave them a rich history that wouldn\u2019t fit a normal-sized book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, when talking about<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the languages of Middle-earth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we may mention some unknown terms that are important for the history of this world<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One of them is the <\/span>Great Journey<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Great Journey (also known as the Great March) was the journey of the Elves called Eldar that they undertook from Cuivi\u00e9nen (the place of their awakening that happened long before the First Age) to Valinor<\/strong>. It is believed that they walked a distance of 2000 miles for almost 50 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s also bear in mind that the history of Middle-earth consists of three long ages: the First Age, the Second Age, and the Third Age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Third Age<\/strong> is the time when both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hobbit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lord of the Rings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happened. It ended when the One Ring was destroyed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Second Age<\/strong> is mentioned at the beginning of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fellowship of the Ring<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movie (the War of the Last Alliance).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The First Age<\/strong> was largely described in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Silmarillion <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the War with Morgoth \u2014 the Dark Lord who had ruled long before Sauron did).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, where did all the languages come from? According to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Lhammas<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a fictional sociolinguistic paper written by Tolkien, they all came from the one language spoken by angelic beings called Valar. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, Tolkien revised the internal history and claimed that Elves were able to construct their own languages. He never updated the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lhammas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1531\" src=\"https:\/\/vasco-translator.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2.jpg\" alt=\"A magic book with an Elvish city in the background.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Quenya_%E2%80%94_The_Speech_of_High_Elves\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quenya \u2014 The Speech of High Elves<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/vasco-translator.com\/articles\/languages\/quenya-and-the-black-speech-of-mordor\/\"><strong>Quenya language<\/strong><\/a> is Middle-earth\u2019s equivalent of Latin. It was used in ancient times but got replaced by newer languages. Later, Quenya was used only by scholars and for ceremonial purposes. Here\u2019s how that happened\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some marched to Valinor (Middle-earth\u2019s equivalent of Heaven) and some returned to Middle-earth. Those who marched to Valinor developed the <a href=\"https:\/\/vasco-translator.com\/articles\/languages\/quenya-and-the-black-speech-of-mordor\/\"><strong>Quenya language<\/strong><\/a>, whereas Noldor, who returned to Middle-earth, adopted Sindarin from the Grey Elves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The clans from the land of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vasco-translator.com\/articles\/languages\/quenya-and-the-black-speech-of-mordor\/\">Lord of the Rings<\/a><\/strong> used Sindarin as their primary language, whereas Quenya was only used for ceremonial, ritual, and poetic purposes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/vasco-translator.com\/articles\/languages\/quenya-and-the-black-speech-of-mordor\/\">Quenya language <\/a>was commonly associated with the High Elves and the firstborn<\/strong>. It was partly because of the language\u2019s close association with Valinor. It is usually referred to simply as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elf-Tongue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elven-Tongue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we mentioned earlier, the Noldor who returned to Middle-earth adopted Sindarin as their primary language, whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/vasco-translator.com\/articles\/languages\/quenya-and-the-black-speech-of-mordor\/\"><strong>Quenya<\/strong><\/a> remained a written and ceremonial tongue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sindarin was also spoken by humans<\/strong>.
