I know Poles love to celebrate Christmas in a traditional way, but how would I be able to communicate with his mum and dad, not to mention his uncles, aunts and grandparents \u2026 and what about all his cousins?<\/p>\n<p>But I said to myself, I\u2019ll be just fine with an English-Polish dictionary, and I\u2019m sure they speak a bit of English. Preparations were well underway for Wigilia \u2013 a Christmas Eve dinner consisting of 12 courses, including <em>barszcz<\/em> (beetroot soup), <em>karp zatorski<\/em> (carp) and <em>pierogi<\/em> (half-circular Polish dumplings). The smell of baked <em>piernik<\/em> (gingerbread) wafted in from the kitchen and I was welcomed into the house with a mug of <em>kompot<\/em> made from stewed plums.<\/p>\n<p>Stefan\u2019s <em>babcia<\/em> (grandmother), Jadwiga, was busily preparing the <em>pierogi<\/em> and squealed in delight when she saw me, grabbing me by the hand and leading me into the kitchen to help her. She pushed Stefan out of the room and started chatting away to me excitedly, giving me strict instructions on how to knead the dough, prepare the filling and then stuff the pastry parcels.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t understand a word. Although I\u2019d picked up a bit of Polish in the year Stefan and I had been together, ordering a coffee is one thing, but cooking in a foreign language is something else! I felt really frustrated and a little bit embarrassed that I couldn\u2019t communicate. My cheeks were on fire, and my cheek muscles were tired from grinning nervously.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"btn btn-default\" href=\"https:\/\/vasco-translator.com\/translators\/vasco-translator-v4\">Speak More Languages Now<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%A6_is_easy_and_fun_%E2%80%A6\"><\/span><strong>\u2026 is easy and fun \u2026<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After 15 minutes of hearing me struggle with my pigeon Polish, Stefan pulled me aside and took me into the living room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to give you this tomorrow,\u201d he said, handing me a wrapped present from under the tree. \u201cBut I think it might come in handy now. Open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ripped off the paper. Inside was a stylish electronic device \u2013 a\u00a0two-way translator not much bigger than my mobile phone that translates real-life\u00a0conversations. Stefan said that it was simple and quick to use, and to prove it, switched it on and spoke into the device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeso\u0142ych \u015awi\u0105t,\u201d he said, and then pressed a button. \u201cHappy Christmas,\u201d the device repeated in a male native-speaker like voice. I smiled, took the translator and marched triumphantly back in the kitchen, closing the door behind me.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%A6_with_an_electronic_translator\"><\/span><strong>\u2026 with an <a href='https:\/\/vasco-translator.com\/translators\/'>electronic translator<\/a>!<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For the next three hours, Jadwiga and I couldn\u2019t stop laughing as we used my new <a href='https:\/\/vasco-translator.com\/translators\/'>electronic translator<\/a> to share recipes, stories and even the odd rude joke. It was a wonder we made any <em>pierogi<\/em> at all!
